English Language Arts
(Revised in 2020)
|
As the foundation for the development of its local curriculum in Literacy and English Language Arts courses the Freedom Area School District uses the Wisconsin State Standards for English Language Arts. Wisconsin Standards for English Language Arts include four distinct areas: reading, writing, speaking and listening, and language. However, certain foundations of the discipline connect all standards across these four areas at a more conceptual level. To further connect the standards, and to make explicit the foundational underpinnings of the discipline of English language arts, Wisconsin has developed several broad emphases of English language arts to consider. They are:
- English language arts is an integrated discipline.
- English language arts instruction builds an understanding of the human experience.
- Literacy is an evolving concept, and becoming literate is a lifelong learning process.
- Critical thinking and problem solving, communication, collaboration, and creativity are aspects of effective English language arts instruction and attributes desired for Wisconsin graduates.
- Literacy, language, and meaning are socially constructed and are enhanced by multiple perspectives.

Mathematics
(Revised in 2021)
|
As the foundation for the development of its local curriculum in mathematics courses, the Freedom Area School District uses the Wisconsin State Standards for Mathematics. The Wisconsin Standards for Mathematics are built on the foundation of 2010 state standards and incorporate shifts that reflect new research and broader expectations of mathematics. There are five important shifts from previous standards (2010) to these revised Wisconsin Standards for Mathematics (2021). Identifying the key shifts builds understanding of how these standards differ from previous standards. The shifts also serve to guide educators in identifying what is necessary in standards-aligned instruction and assessment.

- Science and Engineering Practices — the skills required for the work done in science
- Disciplinary Core Ideas — content understanding across the disciplines of life science, physical science, earth and space science, and engineering.
