Science Department Mission

The Science Department will maintain its tradition of mentoring students in and outside of classrooms, facilitating frequent and effective personal interaction between students and instructors. Our department will prepare the students we teach to make contributions to their local communities and the world beyond as educators, researchers, professionals, and citizens. These goals will be supported through the incorporation and integration of student-centered instruction utilizing appropriate technological advances in both the classroom and laboratory. The Science Department will continue its commitment to serving the needs of its students and society through the development of appropriate partnerships and associations within the scientific and educational community.

Science Department Goals

  • Developing the understanding and mastery of the concepts of our discipline
  • Initiating students into the philosophy, traditions, and practices of the scientific ways of knowing
  • Encouraging reflection on scientific concepts to increase critical understanding of the discipline and the ability to apply its concepts 
  • Fostering respect for and recognition of the dignity of all components of the biosphere
